Vi frågar Pija Lindenbaum
When talking about Swedish children’s books, it’s impossible not to mention Pija Lindenbaum.
During a course at Skeppsholmens Folkhögskola, I was part in a book project called Vi frågar Pija. As part of the assignment, we were given the opportunity to ask Pija a question about her process when creating characters and environments. Her answer was then interpreted as an illustration designed for a double-page spread.
Medium: Ink and digital
Size: 21x42 cm
Course tutor: Per José Karlén
Year: 2025
My illustration is based on my question about character design and Pija’s answer describing how sketching is essential in her process, especially since that she works exclusively with traditional media . I wanted to capture Pija in her workspace and interpret her creative process visually and letting sketching be the main focus. Throughout the image, I’ve hidden small easter eggs inspired by her books. Instead of filling the entire spread with the illustration I chose to embrace whitespace, giving the illustration room to breathe and allowing space for the text to be placed within the double-page spread.
